Before work on the teams final product can begin, research involving gameplay mechanics must be performed with each member learning how to implement the technical features of our simulator into the Hammer Editor.
The most important of these gameplay mechanics is getting fire to appear in the level through a variety of different means and have the player extinguish the flames once they've been shot.
While playing around in the level, we figured out that fire can be activated or extinguished using buttons. By simply tying the fire entity to the button, the player is able to activate the button and the fire disappears. Similarly, the player can do the opposite, activating a button to spawn fire. This proved to be very useful for our level, allowing us to create invisible buttons around the environment players can trigger to create and extinguish fire.
Most importantly, these buttons can be shot. While testing, we were able to have the player fire a bullet directly at the fire, hit a button placed underneath the entity and have the fire extinguish. Despite looking silly with the player using a Pistol to extinguish flames, this allowed us to create destroyable fire that players can fire at with any range of weapon, of which in our game will be a final water hose created in 3Ds Max.
